A Bit About Me

Photographs are memories. Moments captured in time. There are no second chances. This is why it is so important to hire the right person to capture these moments. I was once told, “photography is drawing with light”. In a technical sense, I suppose that is true. However, I believe photography is much more. Photography is capturing the emotion and detail of life’s special occasions. Knowing both the technical aspects of capturing an image combined with understanding its importance and significance is what makes a great photographer.

I have spent the last 20+ years pursuing my passion for photography.

Both I and my career have grown and evolved over that time. I have transitioned from a young college student working in Jazz clubs to a proud father. My young son and three amazing bonus kids are my world.  I Have two rescue dogs Autumn and Viola and anything involving craft beer and bacon brings me to my happy place. I support local businesses. It is the only way I do business.

Traveling is another passion of mine. Although I have been very fortunate to travel to many different locations, there is still so much more I want to discover. Over the years I‘ve learned the best things in life are the people you love. The places you’ve seen and the memories you make along the way.

Becoming a professional photographer was never a choice. Photography chose me. Like so many others, my passion for photography began in high school on the yearbook staff. I went on to study at The Art Institute of Pittsburgh. There I found myself stumbling into running sound at a Jazz Club. Every musician I would introduce myself to said” Dorian... like the mode.” I was intrigued. After a little research, I learned Dorian mode or Doric mode can refer to three very different but interrelated subjects: one of the Ancient Greek Harmonia, one of the medieval musical modes or most commonly, one of the modern diatonic scales.  I’m not sure what all of this means either however I knew my passion for music and photography merged and Dorian Mode Photography was born. I started my professional photographic career photographing local bands. There is a certain energy that accompanies performers of all types that I find absolutely intoxicating. This is why I still get out to shows whenever possible.

Capturing performers began my photographic career. I have had the good fortune to work with some truly talented dancers and musicians. I then branched out to working with several schools with a focus on Senior portraits. There is a level of spirit and passion at this age. These images are a crucial snapshot in time where their personalities start to emerge and the transition from childhood to adulthood is captured. Now that I have kids of my own, I realize how quickly time passes.

I strive for natural color tones with an emphasis on creative lighting. Whether it be dramatic or in balance with what is available. But my main objective is to make you feel comfortable and ensure that you too enjoy the creative process. It’s all well and good to have out-of-this-world images, but if you didn’t enjoy the process, you will never truly love them. I am a big believer in the printed image. Photographs do not deserve to languish on a hard drive. This is why all of my event clients receive a swanky little keepsake box of their 100 favorite images. While my portrait clients and I sit down after your session so I can guide you through the process of selecting the right prints and products for your home. I truly enjoy working with a diverse group of clients, learning about them and being able to capture their pure energy and spirit in my art.

Let’s make some time to meet and get to know each other. I would love to hear your story and be the one you trust to capture one of life’s greatest moments.
